Dr. C. Neill McLeod, the first female president of a community college in North Carolina, recently retired from her post as senior vice president of student services at Wake Technical Community College. Also, the college’s board of trustees honored outgoing member Lide Anderson of Raleigh for her 12 years of service.

Kelly MarCom, a Sanford-based marketing firm headed by Shelley Kelly, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction developed “Marketing Technology and Media,” a new business course for high-school students.

Joy Lumpkin of Raleigh and Tammy Strain of Cary received scholarships from the Women Business Owners Network-Cary. The scholarships are funded through a silent-auction luncheon.

Arts

Durham-based jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon recently released her new CD, “Blueprint of a Lady — Sketches of Billie Holiday.”

Durham poet Kim Arrington published her first book of poetry, “the lapis dwellers.” She also was nominated for Best Female Poet of 2005 at the National Underground Spoken Word and Poetry Awards.

Susan Hecht of Cary joined the roster of artists represented by the Garden Gallery in Raleigh.

Frankie W. Dudley of Raleigh wrote and illustrated a children’s book, “A Book of Poems and Stories.”

Christa McClary McElveen of Raleigh co-authored her first children’s book, “Don’t Tell That to Beasley,” with her sister, Tara McClary Reeves.

Local photographer Catherine Carter is a judge for the photography competition held by the Mental Health Association in Orange County.

The North Carolina Songwriter’s Co-op announced its eighth-annual Songwriters Contest. For information and applications, visit www.ncsongwriters.org. The deadline for entries is Sept. 30.

Chapel Hill attorney Deborah M. Throm was appointed managing partner of Rosen Law Firm’s new Chapel Hill office, which will serve Orange, Durham and Chatham counties.

Kim Harmon, chief operations officer of John F. Sipp & Associates in Durham, earned the Registered Health Underwriter designation from The American College.

Karen Poole of Fuquay-Varina recently was hired as a chef for Emeril Legassi’s Delmonico Restaurant & Bar in New Orleans. Poole studied culinary arts at Wake Technical Community College.

Billie J. Goodman joined Courthouse Retrieval System as the Raleigh regional sales manager.

Barbara-Lynn Freed, owner of Aroma Celebrations! in Chapel Hill, launched a new Web site, www.aromacelebrations.com, to sell scented products.

Heather Yurko, co-owner of Wootini, a designer-toy company in Carrboro, announced the success of its recent production, “Glamour Cat,” at San Diego’s Comic-Con convention.

Deborah McNaughton of Apex, owner of DITY Beads Design-it-Yourself Jewelry, announced:
• Jennifer Boney was promoted to master artisan.
• Jennifer Myers achieved the rank of two-star consultant.
• The following independent design consultants earned Jump Start Rewards for recruiting new consultants: Christy Bounds of Cary, Jessica Barile of Apex and Susan Bostian of Apex.

Sherry Jolley recently was hired as a financial-service representative with SunTrust Bank in Durham.

Jamie Ferguson joined First Citizens Bank in Raleigh as a financial services manager and assistant vice president.

The mayor of Clayton declared July 19, 2005 “Lois Stephenson Day,” to honor the president of Building Blocks Child Care & Development Center. Stephenson recently received the Old North State Award from the Office of the Governor.

Brand development and management agency R+M in Cary was named agency of representation for Cancer Centers of North Carolina. Beverly Murray is the founder and president of R+M.

Belinda Nicoll recently relocated her NLP Life Coaching practice, which offers crisis intervention and life-skills training programs, to the Triangle.

Ursula C. Mannix, owner of Mannix & Associates, a Raleigh-based consulting firm, joined Training Management Review as a writer and reviewer.

Kathy Brewer, along with her husband Jon, opened a Wake Forest location of ShipOnSite, a shipping and eBay company.

In celebration of its first anniversary, A Sweet Reminder, a gourmet cookie company in Raleigh, held a drawing for a year of free cookies at the 2005 Business Showcase last month. Cindy Sheats is the owner of the company.

Firehouse Subs has opened a new location in Apex. Shawn Traynhart is the owner of the Cary store. She is also the area manager for the Triangle.

The Fearrington House Country Inn and Restaurant placed 50th in the continental United States and 12th in the world for overnight accommodations costing less than $250 in Travel & Leisure’s 2005 World’s Best Awards.

Organizations

Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue will deliver the keynote address at the Professional Women’s Success Luncheon next month.

Karin Patrick of Creedmoor was named an outstanding volunteer in Northwestern Mutual’s Community Service Award program for her work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse at the Family Violence Prevention Center.

Karen Ross, president of Montgomery’s Florist in Raleigh, is donating floral arrangements for next month’s Big Bad Ball at the Capital City Club. The charity event raises funds for the Hospice of Wake County.

Suzy Barile of Cary, an English and journalism instructor at Wake Technical Community College and a freelance writer, was re-elected president of the N.C. Press Club.

The Raleigh chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners named Judy Fourie, president of J. Fourie & Co., community-relations chairwoman.

Petra Bottomley of Raleigh was promoted to sales manager at Coldwell Banker Neighborhood Builder Services.

Kathy Brearley of Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston’s Falls of Neuse office in Raleigh was awarded the Accredited Buyer Representative designation from the National Association of REALTORS.

RE/MAX United announced Joyce Cochran, Shannon Hearing and Jin Pak completed the new agent training program at the North Raleigh office. Also, Sheila Evans of the Cary office received the Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist designation.
